There is no fixing it. Please be aware of this issue. We have a HP Laserjet 5MP (that works superbly even after 8 years of steady use) that we had hooked to our Mac G5 with this cable. We have been through 3 of this brand of cables and are now moving on to another brand. On the positive, at least this cable (and ones like it) is a cheaper solution then buying a new printer.6ft USB Parallel Printer Adapter This cable does work fine IF you DO NOT unhook it from the printer EVER, EVER, EVER, not even one time. If you do (even if you are VERRRRY careful) the cheap connections inside the boxed part come un-soldered therefore reducing this cable to garbage.
My iMac does recognize the cable, but does not see the printer. Seems the manufacturer has been bought out; good luck finding the correct software on the webpage. A shame - this printer still has a few years left in it , I bet. I bought this cable to connect my 1995 HP Laserjet 5P/MP to a new IMac, based on reviews saying it worked, ignoring reviews that said it didn't work. Well, mine didn't work.
What a rip off. NOT 27.00. And I'm embarrassed I bought it and already used it before I found out about the others.Live and learn. Right after I purchased this cable, it came down in price by $6.00. Now there seems to be a plethora of these cables available on Amazon for around six bucks.

The good news: this is the ONLY cable I could find that would work with a Mac, almost all the others are PC only.The bad news: if you have an Epson 2200 you still can't use it, because the cable comes with a thick plastic casing around the Parallel plug so it wouldn't fit into the printer outlet until I cracked open the casing a bit and jammed it on. (Then I still got an error response, but that may be because my printer sometimes has issues, not necessarily the fault of the cord).But 3 stars for making one of these that will work with Mac.
This requires a bit of arcane knowledge but Keyspan provides good online help with this task for Windows' and Mac operating systems at [.]., Customer Support, product "UP6C: USB Parellel Cable for Mac&Win".The Keyspan USB-to-parallel adapter offers good value for the price.
